What problem does The Humane League work on?

According to The Humane League, 94% of all animals raised for food are kept on factory farms⁠. Around 86 billion land animals⁠ were slaughtered for meat worldwide in 2024, most of them raised on factory farms.

What does The Humane League do?

The Humane League works tirelessly to end the abuse of animals raised for food through institutional and individual change. The Humane League:

• Pressures⁠ companies and corporations to improve animal welfare standards. THL also encourages people to reduce their consumption of animals.
• Takes a collaborative approach to helping animals. THL trains individuals and organisations, shares resources and works to make the animal welfare movement more effective⁠.
• Promotes corporate campaigns internationally⁠, working with the Open Wing Alliance⁠, which THL founded in 2016.
• Mobilises activists⁠ and students⁠ to campaign for better welfare standards.

Why is The Humane League among our recommended charities?

Animal Charity Evaluators, which analyses organisations working on animal welfare around the world, has carried out an in-depth evaluation⁠ of The Humane League, highlighting its high cost-effectiveness.

Animal Charity Evaluators found that:

• THL's corporate campaigns and its work to strengthen the animal advocacy movement are particularly strong.
• THL often takes a leading role in working with other groups, facilitating the sharing of knowledge about their strategic approach.
• THL has played an important role in strengthening the animal advocacy movement outside the US, by training and working with other organisations through the Open Wing Alliance.
• THL's work shows significant results, especially in improving welfare standards for animals on factory farms and in strengthening the animal advocacy movement.

THL has been recommended by Animal Charity Evaluators since ACE's first list in 2012, and ACE renewed the recommendation⁠ in November 2025. It is the only organisation to have been recommended by ACE every year since 2012.
