New Incentives works in northern Nigeria. Nigeria has the highest child mortality rate in the world: in 2024, about 1 in 9 children there died before turning five. A child born in Nigeria is almost 60 times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than a child born in Estonia. An estimated 40% of deaths among children under five are caused by diseases that vaccines can prevent.

New Incentives' work has been evaluated in a randomised controlled trial, which provided evidence of the programme's large impact. Without the programme, about a quarter of babies received all the vaccines they needed; with the programme, about half did.
