Globally, meat production is at an all-time high, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expects demand for animal products from land animals to grow by about 20% by 2050.
GFI's mission is to unlock the knowledge and resources needed to transform how meat is made, meeting rising food demand in ways that help the climate, protect animals and ecosystems, and strengthen public health. The organisation works to identify the most effective solutions, direct resources and talent, and influence partners across the food system to make alternative proteins accessible, affordable and delicious.
Besides reducing animal suffering, GFI believes that changing the food system will help reduce the risk of disease, feed more people and have a positive effect on the climate.
GFI works to create "a world where alternative proteins are no longer alternative". To do this, GFI:
The independent climate charity evaluator Giving Green has recommended GFI since 2022 and kept it on its Top Climate Nonprofits list for 2025 and 2026. According to Giving Green, alternative proteins are one of the most promising ways to reduce emissions from agriculture and land use, and GFI is a powerhouse in supporting them, with impressive wins under its belt.
